Water services are typically made of 3 types of materials (copper, galvanized steel, and lead pipe). 

Step 1. Locate your water service where it enters your home or business.

Step 2. Determine the water service material by using the pictures below.

Lead Pipe

Place a magnet next to the pipe. It won’t stick to a lead pipe and color will be silver.

Copper Pipe

Place a magnet next to the pipe. It won’t stick to a copper pipe and color will be the same as a penny.

Galvanized Steel Pipe

Place a magnet next to the pipe. It will stick to a galvanized pipe.

Step 3. Take a picture of the water line from 3-4 feet away for the service to include the shutoff valve (if present). Then take a second up close picture from within 1 foot of the service line (See photo examples).
